Inspiring eating and drinking in Perth, West Australia

Eating in Perth – West Australia

We have been travelling to Perth for many years to try the food in this interesting city, however the frequency of our visits increased with our discovery of the exciting Wines of While.

This coincided with our decision to import natural wines from France so that we could have a guaranteed supply of interesting wines that had not been made from grapes that had been sprayed with poisonous insectides and other damaging sprays used in the Australian wine industry.

Wines of While became an immediate sensation in Perth with both young and old showing an interest in natural wines ranging from the petillent naturel sparking wines to oxidative white wines, especially from the Jura and light red wines that were starting to become a feature in the Loire Valley.

All of these styles of wine were available at Wines of While and we would visit regularly to hold events showcasing our wines there.

More recently a friend and colleague in the importing of natural wines, Tom van Been bought the business and we were anxious to see how things were going there under his stewardship.

We have now spent some time there and apart from some physical changes to the building the soul of the place remains with great wines, good service and excellent cooking by a chef we know very well (and who also loves natural wine).

So, we can thoroughly recommend this venue as you first port of call when you arrive in Perth. You can read more about them on their Web site here.

There are some very good bakeries such as Teeter Bakery in East Perth where both the sweet and savoury pastries are exceptional.

For coffee, we usually head for Modus Coffee where they are skilful in coffee preparation and they also have a good range of styles including naturally fermented options. They have two sites, one at Unit 35, 602 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley and the other at 5/660 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park.

On our most recent trip we had a lovely day attending a lunch at the Beaconsfield Wine Bar in the suburb of Beaconsfield. This lovely, bright space with plenty of outside seating not only has an interesting collection of wines (including natural wines we import from France) but has an excellent chef (Drew Dawson) who turns out beautiful food that you might find in one of the better wine bars in Paris. We can recommend this place highly.

We also had an interesting experience at a Chinese restaurant called Yip Au where the noodles were excellent and all other dishes we tried were of a great standard.

You can read our story about this restaurant here.
