Yip AU – Beautiful noodles

Yip AU – Hand made noodles

When we arrive in Perth, we always check to see which places are recommended by our former colleague from our restaurant reviewing days, Max Veenhuyzen whose opinions are always spot on.

After our long flight from Melbourne we felt like a bowl of noodles and therefore checked Max’s recommendations. We were taken by his description of one of the noodle places where he asked a rhetorical question about whether a restaurant that makes you order via a QR code and to get your own chopsticks and spoons could qualify as a hatted restaurant. He answered thus:

It can when the shop is run by sexagenarian Erich Wong, one of the few noodle makers on the planet still using a bamboo pole to make jook-sing mian, a style of noodle edging ever closer to extinction.

We thought that this could be just the place for our lunch and we were so glad we took Max’s advice. The venue goes by the name of Yip AU.

When you enter there may be a queue but seating did not take too long. You can then peruse the menu and place your order using the QR code on the table. If you find this difficult, don’t worry the staff are willing to help anyone who has difficulty with codes.

Serviettes, chopsticks and other cutlery is available on the counter. We ordered a bowl each of the hand-rolled noodles and two of Yip’s side dishes.

The dishes were Pork trotters and Pork belly (this dish had been cooked for a long time with the meat and skin being unctuous and delicious) and a dish of Hainanese Chicken which had also been cooked perfectly so that the chicken was juicy and tender. We also ordered a small dish of braised peanuts which was also great for snacking.

We have included an image of the first part of the menu where you order the type of noodles that you require.

We chose the flat noodles and the clear bone broth soup.

Our bowl of noodles arrived very quickly and was exactly what we expected.

The pork trotters and belly also arrived soon after.

You can see from the photo above that the pork had been cooked for a long time to produce this unctuous dish which tasted absolutely delicious.

And then came the chicken cooked perfectly in the Hainanese style.

All in all this was an excellent meal and one that convinced us we should return to Yip Au on multiple occasions.
