Flor @ Burleigh Heads
Flor Wine & Grocer is a delightful venue in the thriving suburb of Burleigh Heads. On our most recent trip to Queensland we spent an enjoyable afternoon here providing a tasting for their customers of some of the natural wines we import from France.
The venue is easy to find as it is well signposted with a bright and sunny experior as you can see from the photo below.

First we must try to explain what to expect when you arrive at this pleasant Burleigh Heads venue. It is a place where you can scan the shelves of well-chosen wines from Australia and beyond – including some of the wines we import from throughout France.
For example, if you are looking for a natural wine from a star producer you might find a bottle from revered winemakers Anne Ganevat and her brother Jean-François Ganevat. These wines are regarded as some of the stars of Jura wines which also use some of the traditional grape varieties such as Enfariné – a variety that has almost disappeared except for the Ganevats and Étienne Thiébaud from Domaine des Cavarodes.
You might also find other interesting wines from the Auvergne from Marie and Vincent Tricot – we have seen their White Light made from Chardonnay and Muscat, for example. There is always a good selection of Burgundy wines and you might be lucky enough to score a Meursault from the famous Philippe Pacalet, for example.
We also noticed the Foradori wine called Lèzer which is quite complicated but a very interesting wine. The following quote from Foradori gives you an idea of how they treat the wine:
This wine was born with the spirit of experimentation and continues to develop in this way. Overseeing the various developments that take place in each vintage, each year we experiment with the addition of full bunches and changing containers, along with tweaking our techniques and timings for short maceration.
These are just a few examples that we noticed recently, however the range is broad with wines from Australia, Spain, New Zealand, Germany and Austria among others.
It is also a grocer with a well-chosen selection of interesting produce. For those of you with a fondness for the Jura region of France you can enjoy a packet of Brets potato chips flavoured with Jura cheese, for example. They also have many other flavours – in keeping with the fascination for potato chips sweeping the country at present. There is also a very good selection of sardines and anchovies from Ortiz and Olasagasti (including their Cantabrian Sea specialties).

We have found the staff to be very helpful and always of great assistance to customers dropping in seeking something interesting. They all seem to be conversant with all the products on sale including the range of wines, so feel free to ask any questions here and they will be able to fill you in on the details.
If you would like to check on the availability of any wines you are interested in buying before making the trip to their venue, you can check out what is available on their Web site here.
