Bar Liberty – Great Food and Wine

Bar Liberty – Introduction

Bar Liberty has added even more depth to foodie magnet Fitzroy. This pleasant venue is drawing industry figures and wine loving foodies to Johnston Street to enjoy the eclectic range of wines and other beverages and the excellent food.

Think dishes such as pickled cucumber with smoked eel dip or Murray Cod with carrot butter and pine nuts.

More recently, we have been thoroughly enjoying the Polish-influenced food of chef Zackary Leon Furst, which is some of the best food of this genre we have ever eaten. Make sure you try the light-as-a-feather potato dumplings – they are sensational!

On a recent visit we also enjoyed pierogi, some skewers, perfect fried okra, tasty cabbage rolls and a beautiful creme brulee. Lovely food!

We accompanied our food with a natural wine from South Australia made by Jean-Baptiste (JB) Courdesses from hand-picked old-vine Semillon which spent a week under carbonic maceration before being foot stomped and then sealed in a stainless steel tank for three months before being pressed and the juice transferred to old French barrels to develop the texture and flavour. It was bottled without additives of any sort thus making it a wine suitable for vegans.

If you are uncertain about what to drink just ask the manager (Josh Begbie who has extensive experience in London, for example) or any of the staff as they can all offer very good advice.

It is quite close to the CBD so it is easy to catch an Uber or a tram up nearby Smith St to reach this charming venue.

We have included Bar Liberty in our story on this site called “Melbourne – Great Places to Eat and Drink“.
