Ante – Introduction

Of all the restaurants listed on this site in Sydney, this is one of the newer establishments and one we have been hanging out to visit ever since it opened.

Run by Matt Young and Jemma Whiteman, this gem of a place gets everything right. The food is beautiful, the sake selection is stunning, the service is perfect and the music is just what we would expect from Matt, who we have known for a long time.

Over the time we have been importing natural wines he has been importing some of the most interesting sakes created in Japan and he has often joined in when we (natural wine importers) have held tastings throughout Australia.

So, we have got to know him well over many years. We have also followed the career of chef Jemma closely having enjoyed very much her cooking at places such as Billy Kwong, Pinbone and Lankan Filling Station.

When we walked in to Ante we were overwhelmed by the greeting , after having been away from Sydney for so long, firstly due to COVID and later due to illness.

We were greeted by so many of the waiting staff who had previously worked at some of our favourite restaurants such as Ester, Bar Brose and ACME. Also there to greet us was our good friend Forbes who has taken a job here as sommelier due to his interest in sake (as well as wine).

In the background there was interesting music on the turntable from Matt’s amazing selection of vinyl.

We will post more about the food we enjoyed here when we get the time to do it justice – we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and everything about the evening.
