Maison Mahieux
There are many reasons why we often find ourselves in the Loire Valley city of Angers. It is a convenient place to stay when the winter natural wine salons are being held. It has one of the best natural wine bars (Le Cercle Rouge) in France where our friend Joseph Mosse is now one of the part owners.
There are also some excellent places to stay, there is a great bottle shop called La Cave Saint-Aubin which has a wonderful range of natural wines, and if we don’t feel like going out for dinner then there is a special delicatessen to visit where we stock up on food for the evening called Maison Mahieux. And all of these are within easy walking distance of each other.
And the other thing to consider is that Angers has a very central underground car park which is only a few steps from Le Cercle Rouge and La Cave Saint-Aubin and the rest of the city centre is easily reached on foot.
But back to Maison Mahieux! The owners of this deli have a very interesting statement on their Web site explaining what they offer here which we have translated for you.
Born from a father and sons’ passion for gastronomy and wine, and building on a successful first venture, Maison Mahieux gourmet grocery store on Place du Lycée is a place of pleasure, sharing, and conviviality. The diverse selection of sweet and savory products, wines, champagnes, juices, and more will make your mouth water.
In our gourmet grocery store in Angers, you’ll find a wide range of products, from artisanal preserves to boxes of chocolates and premium charcuterie. You’ll find all the essentials and much more. Something to satisfy every gourmet in our gourmet grocery and takeaway shop.
When we are in Angers we often walk to this deli to buy some of their delicious snacks for our dinner or breakfast and then return via La Cave Saint-Aubin where the owner has a deep knowledge of natural wines and stocks some of the best available, particularly those from the Loire Valley such as one of the exciting wines from Xavier Courant or a hyper local Anjou Blanc from Domaine des Brumes.
But back to the deli. Here you will find quality Lonzo and Coppa from Corsica, Chorizo from Spain, a variety of excellent cakes, platters for special occasions and a broad range of high quality cheeses.
They will also slice the hams and other meats on the bone that are available. They also will prepare a variety of different sizes and styles of platters including a very attractive vegetarian platter. Sometimes when we have been here they have had very good quality black truffles for sale!
While you are in this Mahieux area there are a number of interesting stores close to this deli in Place du Lycée. For example, next door at Damien Vétault you can buy some very good chocolates and pastries, over the road there is a variety of shops selling other food products, however our favourite “gourmet” store has now closed its doors.
We have covered more places in Angers on this site such as our favourite venue of all in this city namely Le Cercle Rouge which you can read more about here.
You can also find a more detailed description of our favourite natural bottle shop La Cave Saint-Aubin in our article on Natural Wine Bars in France here. Now we know that it isn’t a wine bar, however it is a great place to search for natural wines from small producers.
You can also check Maison Mahieux’s Web site where they have very detailed information about their services here.
Their address details are shown below.
