Isabella Beeton will always be remembered for the extraordinary take-up of her book, right from the day it was first published in 1861. Within a year almost 60,000 copies had been snapped up by her adoring public.
It is a useful book to remind ourselves of the recipes that were in vogue in the mid-eighteenth century.
Her life was quite short, living from only 1836 to 1865.
