North Bondi Italian Food is a high energy venue where, paradoxically, you can go to relax and enjoy the Bondi Beach environment and lifestyle. You do the relaxing and the staff provide the high energy.
The interior of the restaurant is little altered from its previous incarnation. The terrace is still the best place to secure a table. The bar is still there. The open kitchen is still at the back. The furniture is substantially unchanged.
Once seated, a bottle of Monte Schiavo Pallio di San Floriano Verdicchio from the Marches region appeared promptly. This pale yellow wine with flashes of green tasted of apricots and lemons with a dryness that was appealing.
A food order ranged widely over the extensive menu. A dish of 4 salamis, one of braised red and yellow peppers, another of baccala fritto were all prepared beautifully and suitably packed with flavour.
Out of curiosity we ordered the Bollito Panini which saw warm beef encased in a pasta duro style bread roll with a herb salsa and a hint of chilli. This was a very nice lunch-style dish. Other dishes we sampled such as the Abruzzi-style lamb skewers were also very good. This dish teamed particularly well with the Gabbas Lillove Cannonau di Sardegna 2003.
We also enjoyed a fine chianti jelly with a vanilla custard served in an accompanying jug.
This is a great venue, the service is good and the food is cooked with assurance. It is a very pleasant place to spend some time relaxing at one of the world's great beaches.
