Maybe it's because Sydney has so many Japanese tourists and because the Japanese are so deeply interested in the quality of the fish they eat. Whatever, the Sydney Fish Market has become one of the city's major tourist attractions.
Each weekday morning, starting from 5:30am over 65 tonnes of fresh fish are auctioned. Both the fisherman and the buyers come from around the country and overseas. There's also a large retail section and plenty of cafes where you can sample the day's purchases, including a sushi bar.
The Sydney Fish Market also operates a cooking school. Visit its web site http://www.sydneyfishmarket.com.au for a list of upcoming courses. There are usually at least two or three classes each week.
