This is the best guide to Paris hotels we’ve seen, especially if you’ve already decided what area you want to stay in and are looking for a hotel. The detailed, clear coloured maps at the start show the location of each hotel with a simple page number key, the descriptions are invaluable and the range of hotels includes some real bargains. The majority of the book consists of one page descriptions of each hotel. The hotels are arranged by arrondissement, which also makes it easy to check all the available hotels in your area of interest. By far the largest number is in the 6th and 7th arrondissements, both ideal areas for tourists to base themselves. Each entry includes a photo of a room, the entry or the façade of the hotel, the hotel’s star rating (the majority are *** but there are some **** and ** hotels too), the number and cost of each type of room configuration, whether or not meals are available and the cost of breakfast, the hotel’s pets policy (this is Paris, after all), general facilities (including whether or not there is an elevator), and the nearest Metro station, bus services, and parking locations. The descriptions are especially useful. The writer’s opinion of the hotel is made perfectly clear with both highlights and weaknesses spelled out. There’s no need to read between the lines here! There’s even helpful advice such as which rooms are the largest, quietest, or face an internal courtyard. In addition to a general index, there is also a neighbourhood index which allows you to further fine-tune a search by location and a Good Value Index, organised by arrondissement.Published by Fodor’s, 1998ISBN 0-679-00208-1
